Students that are done with the owl will begin the realism animal project. This is the last project in our value unit. We worked really hard to learn how to shade this month and learn the shading stump tool. This last project will tie it all together. Students will start a project with shading a cat or an owl from a photograph. There are 4 pictures and you are only allowed to choose one to work from. You will also get a piece of nice drawing paper for this assignment. Please, take your time and try not to draw to dark of lines so that you won't need another one. This drawing paper has to be cut to standard paper size for your use, so they are not unlimited.
I will go over how to draw hair again for those that forgot the process. I will write it down here so you remember.
1. Start with a light grey base. You can use your shading stump to shade a light grey base.
2. After, erase the high lights by using a sharp edge eraser.
3. add light grey sharp edge strokes for hair
4. Add darker hair lines afterwards
Step by Step Process:
1. Pick your picture that you want to draw. There are 2 versions of each animal which are the cat and the owl.
2. Create the line art. Draw the outline of the cat or owl. Start with the face and draw the outline of the fur, especially the light areas of the fur that are highlights that you do not want to shade in. In my other class, we used lightboards to create an outline of the realistic photo before shading. We do not have lightboards, so you will have to either try to trace it or eye it out yourself.
3. Start with the light grey and slowly build your darks. You don't want to jump in doing the nitty gritty details until you have a good value base. After you have your base, you can start erasing your high lines and adding in more dark shadows.
4. Check with me often to see where you are at in the process or if you have any trouble. I will help by demoing you a section and giving you critiques. This project will be a learning cruve because we are taking everything we learned and are trying to incorporate to a photo. Don't be scared, you guys are talented enough to do this! .
