After the eyeball assignment, we will be doing something a little different. In a fine art portfolio, it's good to have different pieces with different mediums. We have worked with graphite and charcoal. Now we are going to do paper art and more obscure assignments (until thanksgiving). These assignments won't be as labor intensive as compared to the other assignments, so we will only have one week for them to be completed. They will be a nice addition to your artwork and maybe inspire you as well.
The artist Nikolai Tolstyh does an interesting types of paper art. They cut out animal silhouettes with an exacto knife onto paper. The animals are very clear and defined. Then, the artist finds color in nature to fill the silhouette in, taking a picture.

For this assignment, you have to choose an animal that you want to cut out onto paper. Find a photo reference of an animal. Profile pictures are the best, you want to see a lot of your animal so that when you cut it out you can tell what it is. Try to find an animal that is engaging, like running or jumping, because it adds interest.
When you have your animal, check it off with me and I will give you a piece of paper. You will sketch your silhouette of your animal on the paper. When you're done with it, check it off with me. If you get the okay I will give you an exacto knife to use so you can carefully cut it out. I have to warn you, these knives are extremely sharp and can cut really deep, you have to be very careful when using them. Try cut away from your body and cut very slow. You cannot take these knives home, I need all of them before anyone leaves my classroom.
When you finish, you will then have to go on a nature adventure to find the right hue to fill in the cut out. If your animal is blue you can go to a lake, pond, stream, or the ocean. If your animal is orange you can find a pile of leaves, pumpkins, orange flowers, etc. When you find your colors, take a picture with your phone. Keep the cutout after you are done, you will turn that into me. The pictures you take I want you to email them to me. My email is in the about section.
Points for cutout: 10
Points for photo: 15
Total points: 25
Due: November 9th
