We will be working with white/black charcoal on toned grey paper. It will be the same sized paper as before.
1. Before you can begin, you first need an idea for your eye surrealism. What do you want to tell your audience? What do you want to happen to your eye? When deciding, try to avoid cliches. When it comes to high school portfolios, most of them have a detailed eye drawing. Most of them is of a girl, with pretty eyeliner, the eye is sparkling and one tear is going down her cheek....DON'T DO THAT! It's been so overused and it is completely forgettable because it's been seen again and again. (also don't do the crying blood, skull in the eye cliche, it's lame) This is why we are doing surrealism eyes because you can make something more memorable, original, and unique. When thinking of your image, try not to copy another artist's work, make it your own. Famous eye drawings are very recognizable and if judges recognize it, you will be instantly disqualified. Think of what you want to happen to your eye. Do you want to play with the iris, eyelid, pupil? Do you want your eye to be in a strange background? Do you want multiple eyes? Once you decided what you want to do, talk about it to me so I can okay your idea and help you with cliches. After you get the okay, find a reference of an eyeball photo so you know the highlights and shadows to draw for your paper.
2. Rough draft! Sketch your idea on a scratch piece of paper, Please do not spend forever on this, just take one day to get the idea down. Once you check it off with me I will give you the paper.
3. Work with charcoal to draw your eye! It's easier to lightly sketch an outline and then go over it with charcoal. Start lightly and build your darks. Make sure you have the eye big enough that it fills the majority of the paper!
Turn it in November 2nd
