A concentration is an art portfolio that follows a theme throughout several different pieces. A concentration consists of 12 pieces of artwork. This theme can be shown in many different ways. It can be a theme word, with a bunch of illustrations connecting to the word. It can be a theme story, where the pieces show a progress in a narrative. Make sure that you think hard about your theme that you would be passionate about. You will be working on your concentration for the next 5 months of school.
A concentration will be made with many different mediums. There have been concentrations where people have used the same one medium throughout. However, it's more interesting and engaging to the audience to see the concentration made with different mediums. This shows the judges your wide range of skills and your overall talent in the art world.
This concentration will be made of these mediums. You will already be familiar with most of these mediums, so they shouldn't be too much of a shock. Mediums that we haven't used yet are Pastel and Acrylic.
You have 2 weeks for each assignment. I will expect to receive the assignment on Monday (so you have the weekend if you need it.) If you finish a project earlier, you can start earlier. Some projects won't take a full 2 weeks. Some assignments might take more time, like painting for example. You are going to have to manage your own time to meet the deadlines.
Each Project will be 25 points. For each project, you will have to create 2 sketches or thumbnails to prepare for your illustration. The sketches will be 5 points.
Every 2 weeks, I will post a new assignment on this website talking about the medium and posting project examples from other AP art portfolios. Though this is not an official AP art class, this is a class that is focused on creating a portfolio you can use for your future, like getting into art school, entering art contests, winning scholarships, or getting a job. If you put in a lot of effort, it will really show, so try your best to create projects you feel proud of.
If you need inspiration, here are some examples of portfolios that explain why they are good.
