Fortress is an assignment where we are going to make castle like concept art for a builder game. There are games where you can create towns and cities and these buildings give you supplies to create more buildings or update your town. The art for these different types of buildings needs to be created and look like they can level up when you purchase upgrades. Usually, a building looks basic are really bad (in a well drawn way of course) and over updates it looks better and better! These artists study different sorts of architecture to create unique buildings in perspective that fit the game.
For this assignment, we are going to create a castle in perspective. To achieve accurate perspective, we will be sketching on top of an ISO graph. (download link below) An iso graph is a graph that these artists use as a guideline to make sure that the buildings don't get too wonky outside of perspective. After the artists get the general shape of their sketch, they will add elements to it that will make it shine and stand out compared to a normal building. I will show you guys a demo on how to use the ISO graph (there is a bit of a learning curve to it, but don't be scared!) Your document size is the ISO graph itself. You will copy the most zoomed in version and paste it into photoshop. Then, you will put the ISO graph at 50% layer opacity and sketch on a new layer above it.
Requirements:
-Create accurate perspective using the ISO grid
-ISO layer, sketch layer, line art layer, color soft shaded layer. Layers are all named.
-Concept Art fills out the majority of the canvas (it's not a small little drawing in a giant space) Most artists will draw on a huge canvas over 2048k pixels if they are not doing vector art.
-The castle is SOFT SHADED aka PAINTED and is not cell shaded. 25-35 percent opacity is a good percent to shade. (color map it, blend it, clean up)
-Castle has details added to it that makes it a castle like windows and bricks. Castle is cleaned up, not messy, and shows professional quality.
-Choose a real castle photograph as inspiration for your castle. Most of these artists will study architecture to draw inspiration from. Look at some castles and create a more simplified game version.
-4+Towers
-The center of the castle has a sculptural element.
-1+ Flags
-Magical beast has to guard the castle (dragon, alicorn, harpy, skeletons, MERIKA eagles, etc)
-Area around the castle has to painted and there should be a distinguished feature. (moat, cool fantasy tree, river, bridge, really cool rocks, graveyard)
-Personal touches are added to your castle that makes it different from your friends. AKA theme of your castle. Is your castle going to be a fantasy castle with glowing magic everywhere? Is it going to be a happy princess castle? Or maybe an evil castle run by the undead? Having a theme for the castle can help you with your style and add personal features that make it look cool and not lame.
Points: 40
